How To Avoid Having To "Marry" Gays In Church

.
Easy

Don't "marry" straights in Church. Separate the Sacrament of Marriage from the civil contract.

Embrace the French model. The state does what it believes in at the Mairie. The Church does what it wants at Church.

Priests aren't registrars of birth or death; they don't have to be of marriage.

We're not Anglicans: we don't need an ecclesiastical Civil Service.

Absolutely agree. I proposed this in New Zealand when we had our own Civil Unions Bill going through Parliament. Let civil society pass its laws by all means - and let people register those unions on a registrar. But keep the sacrament of marriage out of it.

I would agree wit you, only problem is that the church doesn't.
In france this is exactly what was propsed by the PACT but was fiercely attacked by the church.
